Thank you for your interest in volunteering!
Our volunteers play an important role in supporting the COA to fulfill its mission of helping older adults remain independent. Because of our volunteers, we are able to provide a very personal touch, enhancing the services available to St. Joseph County seniors. We have needs for volunteers in all areas of our organizations. Below are listed a few of our volunteers needs with descriptions. The time commitment varies with each assignment. To see a more detailed listing of all our volunteer opportunities, please click here.
Friendly Reassurance – Friendly Reassurance is a program to ensure those seniors who are living alone are checked on with periodic phone calls or even personal visits. It’s a way to let the senior know that someone is concerned about his or her welfare. This volunteer experience is very rewarding and flexible as calls and visits can be made when it is convenient for you.
Trip Chaperone – The COA typically offers one to two trips per month to destinations throughout Southwest Michigan and parts of Indiana. This volunteer is responsible for making sure the trip goes smoothly and that the seniors participating get where they need to be. The trip chaperone is usually in charge of any tickets that are needed for the trip. A nice benefit for the volunteer is that he or she gets to participate free of charge.
Craft/Activity Assistant – this position is very flexible and varies depending on when we have a craft or activity planned that requires extra help. If you are interested in helping out with a craft, just fill out the volunteer form and we will contact you to discuss upcoming programs and what might work best for you and for the COA.
Tuesday Toolmen – This group of volunteers makes minor repairs to seniors’ homes. If you are handy around the house and would like to help a senior stay safe in his or her home then this is a great volunteer opportunity for you!
